Eliza’s Waterfall Outdoor Boudoir Session | Ithaca, New York

Boudoir photo shoots can feel a bit intimidating at times, it’s a big jump into a very intimate setting for a lot of folks. That’s why I love doing sets where we can just dip our toes into the sexier mood without committing fully to it. And when you’re a photographer based in the Finger Lakes, there’s an unlimited supply of gorgeous waterfalls and lakes that naturally give us the perfect setting to get a little bit of that summer dress, cute and innocent look, but also put on a swim suit and get wet and sexy playing in the water. And let me tell you, Eliza nailed those looks, and then some! Any time she makes the drive from Syracuse for a session, we make some magic together.

My tips for having a successful outdoor boudoir shoot once you throw a waterfall into the mix:

  • Expect to get wet! It sounds obvious when you’re playing around water, but you might be thinking, Oh I’ll just have it in the background and stay dry! And that’s not a safe bet – most waterfalls will have a pretty aggressive overspray and the mist will soak you eventually anyway. Be prepared to sacrifice your hair and makeup.
  • Go over your shoot plan before reaching the waterfall. Once you’re there, you’ll realize it’s actually pretty loud closer to the water, so it can be hard to hear each other. Talking things out at first will help cut down on having to yell over the rushing water!
  • Bring a towel. As you might know, a towel is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. At a photo shoot, you can use it to dry off, clean your feet after trudging through murky water, wrap wet clothes and swim suits to carry back to the car, wipe a camera if it gets wet accidentally. Trust me, you’ll be thankful you packed it!

Let’s go chasing waterfalls!
